long weekends

Ah, don't you just love long holiday weekends? Especially those where the holiday falls on a Friday or Monday and it's a three-day weekend!? The 4th is probably one of my favorite holidays because the weather is warm, grilling is a requirement, and it's a good time to enjoy being with friends and family.

This year, the holiday happens to fall on the weekend of a cat show I volunteer for so my plans involve traveling to Virginia. There are a few volunteers that I only see when we go to this show, so it will be nice to visit with them. One of the ladies has a horse farm and I think we might be going to her home Friday night, which I've never been to. I LOVE horses and I'm really looking forward to seeing her animals.

What your plans for the holiday?

Book #30 Something Blue by Emily Giffin

*spoiler warning: If you haven't read Something Borrowed, and you plan on reading this series, you many want to skip this review*

In Giffin's sequel to Something Borrowed, the voice of the story changes from Rachel to Darcy as we pick up where the story left off in the previous novel. Despite the fact that Darcy has cheated with her fiance's friend, Marcus, and become pregnant by him, Darcy exits her best friend Rachel apartment, furious as she has just discovered that her fiance, Dex, and Rachel have been secretly seeing each other. Darcy attempts to seek comfort in Marcus and one of her only remaining friends, Claire, but she is soon abandoned by both of them leaving her wondering what or who to confide. With her family none too happy as well, Darcy seeks out her childhood friend Ethan who is now living in London. However, Darcy's invasion only annoys Ethan as she continues to be self-absorbed and completely disregards her pregnancy. After a stern lecture from Ethan, Darcy realizes that she must make a change and soon discovers that she might be falling for her friend.

I was excited to read the continuation of this story but I had a hard time reading this one from Darcy's point of view because I wanted to lecture her just as Ethan did for first 1/2 of the book. While I found her completely annoying, I soon began to feel sorry for her as it seemed as if she kept unknowingly driving everyone away. I must applaud Giffin as she evokes those emotions from a reader because I totally did a 180-turn by the end of book toward Darcy and actually found myself cheering for her.

the weekend in review

It was a busy one here. On Friday, we took off early to shuttle all three cats to the vet for their annual. George has been coughing a bit lately and had some sneezes, so we wanted to get him checked out just to be sure nothing else was wrong. I was thinking that he most likely was suffering from allergies and the vet agreed after examination that it appeared to be the case. I was afraid that he might has a touch of asthma but she doesn't think that's the case. She said that she could tell he has a bit of irritation in his throat so she prescribed some antibiotic and an antihistamine, which has been all so fun to administer. Jazzy had a good check up. She had to have two teeth pulled last year and I was afraid that she might have to have another one pulled. Everything looked okay though. Jerry is still heavy and needs to lose weight. We've been feeding him the Prescription Diet RD but, trying to separate food with three cats is no easy task sometimes. He's lost some but he really could stand to lose another 1.5 pounds. He's going to have to do a few more workout sessions with the feather toy each week I suppose. ;)

After all the vet shuttling, I was exhausted. Hearing three cats scream bloody-murder in the car really puts a strain on the old nerves. I took a short nap when I got home before we headed over to my SIL's for my nephew's birthday party. He turned 5 years old on Friday! I don't know if I've ever mentioned it before but he has allergies to several foods, including wheat, eggs, soy, peanuts, and dairy so he can only eat specific things. He also has a pretty serious speech problem and some vitamin deficiencies that is now being controlled with medication. Needless to say, it's been and will be a long road. I pray that he'll overcome all these things one day and he is getting better as we learn more about his needs. Anyway, he had one of his best birthday parties yet as he actually sat in the floor and opened his gifts as he never did this in previous years due to trying to balance his meds, which generally made him uninterested. Poor little guy. After presents, we blew up balloons with a portable helium tank my SIL got at the party store. We let them float to the ceiling where he likes to pick one out, go outside, and watch it float away into the sky. He was so funny to watch him so carefully select which balloons he wanted.

On Saturday, I spent most of the day cleaning up around the house and doing laundry. My big task was cleaning the inside of all the windows in the house. I was pretty tired by mid-afternoon. We had a really bad storm blow through in the last afternoon. I took a glace at the cloud outside and freaked out because it so looked like something that would produce a tornado. I quickly searched the news channels to see is there were any warnings or watches for tornadoes but it was only for a severe thunderstorm. I swear it looked much worse than that. Thankfully it only lasted maybe 20 minutes and it was moving really fast. I made some of the Pioneer Woman's steak sandwiches for dinner and we watched this movie.

Sunday, the weather had cooled off a bit and we decided to straighten up the garage. Since the winter, we have been haphazardly putting storage totes and other items where ever we could find space. I got rid of some boxes and pulled some stuff that need to be searched through and purged. I have a few furniture projects stored in there as well that I keep ignoring. I hope to work on them this summer and I will post the progress here. We got everything tucked away and I couldn't believe how much room it freed up. I wonder how long it will last. I also cleaned out the car, which was much needed. I wanted to give it a wash but it was raining a bit. Isn't that usually the case? If you want it to rain, wash the car. The rest of the afternoon I sewed more scraps for catnip pillows and we made a run to Target. I ended the night by watching the last half of Design Star and the FoodNetwork Star. I'm starting to like Lisa on the FNS more and more each week. She's a little high strung but I could see her doing some sort of show. I wonder whatever happened to last year's winner, Amy? I remember seeing her show a couple times but then she just disappeared. Guy has really been successful though!

a night at the movies

Last night, we had a pass to see a screening of the new Jolie movie.

We head to Five Guys for some yummy grub.

FRIES!

I love 'em with malt vinegar. SO good.

Here's the theater all lite up. We just got an IMAX screen this past Christmas, which has been pretty popular. I was happy to hear recently that the next Harry Potter movie is going to be in IMAX so that will be great to be able to see it locally.

The movie wasn't at all what I expected. It was actually not bad, while pretty violent. The action/chase scenes were completely insane. We scored some tees they were tossing out as promotional material. There were tons of posters on the seats, but I ended up giving mine to the guy sitting beside me. The front of the shirt says the name of the movie and the back has the tag line "choose your destiny."

Oh, and a night out couldn't go by without a bit of shopping. I found these cute sandals at Payless for $7!

Book # 29 Deep Dish by Mary Kay Andrews

In Andrews' newest book, Gina Foxton stars as the the chef in a regional cooking show called Fresh Start. When she discovers that her producer boyfriend slept with the wife of the show's sponsor and here show is doomed to be canceled, she believes her life is over. A new opportunity soon opens up as she discovers that The Cooking Channel is looking to add a new show and they are interested in her. However, they are also interested in another regional cooking show called Vittles, which is hosted by wildly popular Tate Moody. The tension builds between both Gina and Tate as the network decides to turn their battle for The Cooking Channel spot into a reality show competition. This takes them both to an island off the coast of Georgia where things not only heat up in the kitchen but with each other.

Having read and thoroughly enjoyed Andrews's series featuring Savannah residents Weezie and BeBe, I was excited to hear that she was penning a new book. I was actually reminded a bit of the Weezie and BeBe characters with Gina and her sister Lisa in this book. I had a hard time putting this one down as I got caught up in the cooking competition between Gina and Tate. I've heard mixed reviews on this book as some just don't like it at all. But, I thought it was quite enjoyable and a good choice for summer reading.
